Axum - The Queen of Sheba
April 12 - On the outskirts of Axum sits the foundation of The Queen of Sheba's palace. It was unearthed in 1974 when farmers unsuspectingly dug up something they thought was odd. That prompted further investigation and what they found were the remains of this 3,000 year old palace believed to belong to The Queen of Sheba, mother of Menelik I, first emperor of Ethiopia.
Carrie and Mose, our guide, standing on the steps at the main entrance to the palace.
And here is Carrie standing on the spot where the queen's throne sat.
The Queen of Sheba even had a bath, where she was regularly bathed with a combination of water and milk.
The foundation of several rooms with the palace.
The ruins of the palace kitchen, including an oven constructed with fired bricks.
Two young women leaning over the palace wall trying to get our attention in order to make a sale. We didn't get a basket, but we got a nice picture.
