Mekele, Ethiopia - St. Mikael Imba Church

April 10 - St. Mikael Imba Church is situated on a hilltop in a remote region about 2 hours drive along a rough gravel road putside Mekele. Like Wikro Chirkos Church, St. Mikael Imba was also "built" in the 4th century. Getting there from the parking area involved a 15 minute walk up a ladder and steep steps. At the top of the hill, a large compound came into view with the church, cemetery, monk & nun cells and a museum they're trying to get off the ground. We "toured" the museum. They don't have many objects on display, but they are very proud of what they have.

The facade of the church. Remember, this entire structure is ONE large mass of stone!

The prayer nook where priests and nuns stand during Liturgies. The long sticks are used by the clergy and Worshippers to lean on during the long 3-4 hour services. Sitting down is not allowed.

Carved stone pillars.

Cruciform pillars support the back of the church structure.
