Babile and The Valley of Marvels

April 6 - After a good night sleep and hearty breakfast, we were ready to head out for more adventure.  Benimi (a.k.a. Ben), our incredible Harari guide, picked us up at the hotel around 9:30 and we drove 30km east to a small village called Babile, famous for its unique rock formations, giant Acacia trees, enormous termite mounds and animal life. Along the road we passed many villages, mosques and camel trains.  The Valley of Marvels is a collection of volcanic formations along the road that is nothing like anything else in the region. It's by no means Bryce Canyon or Arches National Parks, but it is unique compared to the typical local landscape. While walking along the road, we saw several Colobus monkeys, a dik-dik (endemic small deer-like mammal) and many more camels. I even got one to smile for me.

The last photo in this series is of a nomadic Somalian camp in The Valley of Marvels. It shows one house covered with grass blankets and the other house with grass blankets removed revealing the handmade stick framework.  The herders follow the camel trains, sometimes covering thousands of miles over multiple years.
