Gheralta Area - Abreha we Atsbeha Church (Exterior)

April 11 - This church was built by twin brothers, Abreha and Atsbeha, who were kings of the region and are now local saints.  Considered one of the finest rock hewn churches in the Tigrai Region, it is relatively large and has three sancturaies; one each dedicated to St. Gabriel, St. Mikael and St. Maryam. The Italian-style portico was added during The Occupation in the late 1930s.

The new entrance gate, under construction.  Workers in the distance are cutting stones by hand.

The stone carved steps leading to the church compound.

The facade of the church featuring the portico added by the Italians.

The side of the church showing the monolithic nature of the structure.

The ancient cemetery adjacent to the church. Graves are marked by small vertically oriented headstones.

Priests' and caretaker's quarters.
