Simien Mountains National Park - More Scenery

April 14 - Everywhere we turned, there was another great photo op. Here are a few more random shots from our day in the park.

The landscape in this area was very unique in that there was desert vegetation (i.e. cacti, aloe vera, and palms), tundra-like pastures, and flowering pine trees all co-existing.

Deep canyons were everywhere.

This shows the dramatic escarpment caused by volcanic uplift during the Cenozoic Era.

This was a wonderful place to hang out - the bar. In fact, it is the highest bar in Africa. See the sign?  Each afternoon and night we spent a couple of hours sitting around the fire talking with fellow guests as well as the Ethiopian drivers and guides. We learned that former President George W. Bush was at the lodge not long ago. Aside from that bit of trivia, we had some fascinating discussions about history, religion, politics, and food. All the basic topics of discussion when people from around the world get together.
